Picture Book Heroes

MAN ALIVE, I love children's publishing.

Maurice Sendak — Maurice! Sendak! — had a two-part interview with Stephen Colbert this week. If you missed it, well . . . I don't want to spoil the funny, so you'll just have to watch it. The only thing I will say is that it's the best Colbert interview in the history of Colbert interviews.

Here's part one:

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! I wish I could hang out with him. He would be such an awesome dinner guest.

And to prove the new generation is equally hilarious and clever and wonderful — despite what Mr. Sendak may say, ha! — here's the trailer for Mac Barnett and Adam Rex's upcoming meta-picture book Chloe and the Lion:

(Thanks for sending that to me, Kiersten!)

  1. Okay, now I have a favorite book trailer!! <3 those two boys!!

And Maurice....I have loved him for thirty years...sigh. He is partially responsible for my authroness. (But don't tell him that...he might not be that impressed with what he inspired!)

  3. Oh my God, I LOVE the Maurice Sendak interview. My favorite part is at the very end, when he flips out about e-books. Or possibly when he's on a magic marker high and starts singing. "You pulled a song right out of my nose!"

  5. This may be blasphemous to say, but I have never been a fan of Sendak but that interview made me a fan. Too funny.

I got an ARC of Chloe and the Lion and NCTE and thought it was SO FUNNY. But then I saw the trailer and it made me love Mac Barnett and Adam Rex even more. Adam Rex is a mad genius of a novelist. The True Meaning of Smekday is one of my favorite books of all time. It was so funny that it would make me laugh till I cried.

  7. Ello, Stephanie! I just popped it to say I love your blog. And AatFK (best contemporary ever.) And St. Claire.
And I just made this illustration of Lola, and I thought I'd share it with you!

I'd love to hear what you think. This was one of my first attempts to design a character not my own. :)

  8. Maurice Sendak is awesome. My favorite children's author, though, is Jan Brett. Those books are breathtaking. :)
