Release Day, Release Day!

Happy release day, Lola-darling!

In honor of this fabulous day, here are three inspirational Lolaesque ladies:

(1) Tavi Gevinson, whom I wish I'd been as a teenager. Creator of the most quirkyfun fashion blog and what looks to be an AMAZING new online magazine for teen girls, Rookie. I adored her recent interview with Aubrey Plaza!

(2) Doe Deere, whom I wish I were now. Creator of my favorite lipstick line (seriously, I have six of them, and I'm aching for more!) and owner of a positively epic wardrobe.

(3) Francesca Lia Block, whom I wish to be someday. Creator of Weetzie Bat and dozens of other books and characters that Lola Nolan would not exist without.

Weetzie Bat is my all-time favorite novel — Yes! Out of any book ever! — and I've read it yearly since I was a teenager. It's perhaps my greatest inspiration. It's difficult to describe Francesca's work to anyone who hasn't read it, but maybe this will help: magic realism, Los Angeles, gritty, beautiful, urban, rock-n-roll, sad, sexy, faeries, strange, and lyrical.

Francesca is a goddess. And very, very Lola.

Three MORE things:

(1) For my book-blogger friends: You are welcome to add this new, cute, official, vertical banner of Lola/Anna to your website! Scroll down to the bottom of the page to find it.

(2) Thank you. To all of you. Your encouraging comments got me through an extremely difficult time in my life, and I will never forget the support that you have given both me and this novel. I sincerely hope that you enjoy it.

(3) xoxo

  4. Congratulations Stephanie! So glad that the world can finally see how amazing Lola is. I read it a few months back, after borrowing my friends ARC at your nyc meet & greet, and devoured it in a day. Definitely cried a few times too. You've earned a place on my "best books of the year" list 2 years in a row now! Keep up the good work. :)

  17. Wishing you a Happy Lola Day! Can't wait to read it. Perhaps you could persuade your publisher to visit the Boston area? A girl can dream can't she?

Happy release day! I'm going to pounce on Lola over the weekend!

I hesitate to leave the following comment because I don't want to seem like I'm shilling, especially when I'm not affiliated with the company. But I want to share! So . . . Morgana Cryptoria are my Holy Grail of lipsticks. They're highly pigmented yet very moisturizing and available in a mind-boggling range of colors. They apply evenly and last on the lips. There are tons of helpful swatch photos across the blogosphere, so I do hope you check them out!

  22. I am so excited for Lola! And the fact that Francesca Lia Block is on this list makes me so happy!
I read the Weetzie books back when I was eleven and have read and loved almost everything she's done yet.
I pretty much try and be a mixture of Francesca Lia Block's characters every day.

  26. Stephanie, happy book release day! My copy of Lola and the Boy Next Door arrived in the mail today. The cover is so purdy! I especially love Lola's purple hair and the pastel Victorian houses in the background. I can't wait to meet you next Wednesday in my fair hometown of San Francisco! It's supposed to rain that day. Boo!

  28. Dear Stephanie,

A few things: Firstly, Happy Lola Day!

Secondly, I'm about 40 pages into the book and I am a swooning, floating, dreamy mess already! I am absolutely, undeniably in love with Lola and the people in her world (including the incomparable Ah-na and her ridiculously attractive Etienne).

Thirdly, Your book is set in my beloved city and I swear you could be writing about very real people in my life. The fact that you've mentioned combat boots under prom dresses and tiaras and The Mission in the first handful of pages has me utterly devoted to you for life (though you already had my loyalty by page 2 in for Anna).

Lastly, for now, (but I can promise another rambling comment/message/email will be coming atcha in the near future) thank you for writing about strong, independent, courageous women. They represent the people I write about--"Others"--and I am always dancing and happy-clapping when I discover fellow Others receiving some attention. Your characters are such exquisite Ambassadors of Other. THANK YOU!

Now I'm off to read more Lola til I pass out on my laptop!

    So much love and light,
    KJ

P.S. The Weetzie Bat books and Francesca Lia Block? Changed. Me. I read them when I was in high school and my world was never the same.

  31. Oh, Stephanie, I just finished Lola, and OH MY GOSH IS IT WONDERFUL! I think I'm going to start it all over again now. Le sigh. <3

Congrats on its release! I'm buying copies for everyone I know. =)

  32. Steph,
I wish I could have stayed at Malaprops longer! It was so fun to see you, if only for a few seconds. You looked adorable!
And, now to the book...I LOVED it!!!!! I did not want it to end! Everything about it was perfect and you captured perfectly the feelings that come with falling in love. Seriously, I love your books and I love you!!

  33. Steph! I just finished Lola on my kindle and I want to thank you so so so much for writing this book. I'm 26 now but it made me feel young again, it took me right back to high school and I'm sure I'm not the only person over 25 wondering if it's creepy to crush on Cricket. I want my own cricket. I love his little hand messages, how nervous he is, how they don't just jump into bed together -- all the little touches, those were electric. I LOVE Andy and Nathan, I want them as parents. I wish Lola would have realized earlier she was with the wrong boy, but that's not a story criticism! I loved imagining all of Lola's crazy outfits and I'm so glad Anna and Etienne showed up in this book. It's sweet that they made friends with Cricket. St Clair is adorably funny still.

This book kept me company over the last few days when I was feeling down and lonely and depressed... I wish real life was as good as you write it. Maybe it is and I haven't found it yet.

The last bit I loved was your final bit in the acknowledgments :) so cute. Maybe what Cricket and Lola have really does exist...
    :D <3 <3 <3

I have to confess I'm a nearly 38 year old English mum who just read Anna and had to tell you that....I loved it! I can't wait to read Lola - I loved the first chapter preview. I was captured from page 1 with Anna and thank you from the bottom of my heart for managing to write a Brit boy and his accent and made him sound truly British! (Dick Van-Dyke take note!).
So congratulations on Lola's publication :)

  35. Congratulations! I can't wait to get my copy!

  36. You know I LOVE Lola - it makes me feel disloyal to Anna to say it, but I think she's even better! Way to smash through second-bookitis. Also, wanted you to know I wore my City Pie Guy shirt yesterday, and several people commented on it. At which point I would explain it isn't an actual business, it's a character in a book. That made them like it even more. :) Thanks for the trivia contest and the cool prizes - a lovely surprise at a great reading.

  37. Congratulations!
I loved Lola so much! I read it all in one sitting! I have so many emotions. Cricket is perfect. One of the things I absolutely love about your characters is their little quirks. I don't know what to say! Perfect book, you are amazing.

  40. Stephanie! It is well past the Australian release date that you posted on your blog the other week, and my local bookstore has still not gotten Lola in (totally not your fault, of course). It is very stressful - added onto the fact that I don't actually have any money to buy your book (sad, I know). I am looking forward to the day when my Dymocks gets your book in! (And I hope that it is soon!)
