Real Men and the Boy Next Door

My first hardcover copy of Lola and the Boy Next Door arrived last week. My hands shook as I removed it from its packaging. It took me a decade to finish writing it.

But . . . I did.

I'm giddy about the pretty pastels. They are very, very San Francisco. And I'm especially happy that these Victorian row houses made the spine. The novel would not exist without the city. Thank you to my publisher for recognizing the heart of my story.

And a different kind of thank you to Nathan, for my favorite Lola-related tweet:

HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! Awesome!

Lola has also received her first two professional reviews. They both contain spoilers, so here are the non-spoiler highlights:

"Perkins avoids the second-novel curse with a delectable companion to her debut hit . . . she embeds a tour of San Francisco culture throughout the snappy storyline. And steamy kisses and tingly touches? There are still plenty of those, too."

—KIRKUS REVIEWS

"snappy dialogue and sexy love interests . . . [Lola's] self-deprecating sense of humor and Perkins's skill at capturing Lola's seesawing emotions make for a lively romance . . ."

—PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

Snappy! They both called it "snappy"! I love that. Do you think I can bribe other reviewers to use that word, too? I'd for love this to be on my paperback:

Four out of five reviewers think this book is snappy!

Hee hee.

Today, pre-ordering Lola on Amazon is only $9.99. Just . . . throwing that out there. Thank you for your support and friendship.

Lola is super snappy. (Been meaning to tell you...one of my favorite things in the world is when I recommend Anna to a friend who in turn recommends it to another and then the friend-of-a-friend reports back that she loved it. It's like pay-it-forward, book-style!)

Sarah said...

Oh, this novel is going to be fantastic! And most certainly snappy.

I'll be reviewing it. I promise to use the word, "snappy" if I possibly can. I have to admit, Anna was so close to perfect that when I couple it with the fact that I grew up in San Francisco, I'm inclined to want to like Lola.

SO exciting! I absolutely love love loved Anna so I'm way excited to read Lola. When is the official release date?

I am SO SO SO Happy for you!! :) <3

Becca — September 29th, but you'll probably be able to find it in stores a bit earlier than that.

Thank you, everyone! :)

I can't wait to get my copy of Lola! I pre ordered it... A very long time ago. I can't even remember the day. Random fact: My nickname used to be Snappy. I got it from a lady I took Yoga with because my ankles would always pop in class.

Stephanie Perkins said...

Madeline — I have poppy ankles, too!

Reminds me of Elle Woods and her snaps. I will snap to Lola!

Is Lola going to be available on Target, too? Cause my local Borders closed out, and I'M DYING to know.

Stephanie Perkins said...

Annaiss — I don't know, but my guess is (sadly) no. At least not until it comes out in paperback. If this changes, I'll definitely mention it!

PRE ORDERED!!!! Boo yeah!!

Congrats on the beautiful cover and reviews. I have never looked forward to a book release like this. I am literally counting down the days.

I hope you find your way to Australia someday? That would make me a very snappy, ah I mean HAPPY camper! ;)

ooh congratulations on the reviews. I've have had it pre-ordered for ages :) I can't wait.

*mental note to use word snappy in my future review has been made*

I did a little squee when I scrolled down and saw some lovely pics. :) The countdown til Penguin drops me a LOLA bomb is ticking. The moment I do get it, assignment or no, I'm ripping through that thing. Probably within 24 hours, same as Anna (I've only ever read a book in a 24 hour span, like, maybe a total of 5 times in my life).

Excited! And yes, I SECOND THE AUSTRALIA TOUR THING!! I must see that funky hair in person. One day...

It definitely is SNAPPY!! So glad I was able to read an ARC :) And now I'm planning a visit to SFO in November! WOOT!!

That's a FAB pre-order price! I'm waiting to buy mine in person though, since you're going to be in Austin so soon after the release. Have to have my copy in time! :)

I pre-ordered Lola and the Boy Next Door earlier this month and can't wait to read it! I grew up in San Francisco and still live here, so I'm doubly excited to read a book that takes place in SF. I can't wait to meet you and Maureen Johnson in October!

Ha! My word verification is "slizzles"! Does your snappy book slizzle? A little sly sizzle? "Lola gave me the slizzles." :-)

Congrats on the REAL BOOK!!! Yay yay yay yay!!!!

I JUST finished Anna and the French Kiss. LOVED IT. It was recommended to me by a friend. I love, love your writing in that book. I was giggling with the romance and laughing with the funny character of Anna. Love it. I will be reading your new book!

Thanks!

I've already pre-ordered it because I knew you weren't coming to SoCal. :-(

My sadness is brightened by the fact that I'll actually get the chance to meet you in person at DBF!

1)Can't wait!
2)My linguistics teacher looks a lot like Jarrod, and last class he was wearing a t-shirt from a french soccer team (Olympique de Marseille) that has an M inside a circle and from where I was sitting looked a lot like the Ministry of Magic "M".
3)I have a picture with a colorful row of houses near Haight and Ashbury, first from a trip I did with friends, then my friend painted it and the next time we went we took the picture with the houses.
