Eggnog That Doesn't Suck

Welcome to December!

This is a PSA for eggnog-haters. I realize this is most (or all) of you. I know, I know. Eggnog is disgusting. You try it every three or four years, willing to give it another shot because it sounds festive and delicious. And then you taste it. And then you remember why you hate it.

Three years ago, I was you.

Three years ago, I was introduced to organic eggnog.

And guys. GUYS. You know everything you hate about eggnog? The taste? The color? THE TASTE? Well . . . ORGANIC EGGNOG LOOKS AND TASTES NOTHING LIKE REGULAR STORE-BOUGHT EGGNOG.

Seriously. Nothing like it.

It's not canary yellow, the ingredients list is short and tidy and every word is recognizable, and—here's where the magic happens—NO CORN SYRUP. Corn syrup may be yummy in your Mountain Dew and Twizzlers, but it's making your eggnog taste like a car battery.

The only brand I've tried is Organic Valley, and it's so scrumptious that I have no reason to experiment. So there's my official endorsement. Organic Valley Eggnog. My husband and I drink ours in penguin-shaped mugs with a sprinkle of nutmeg on top.

THIS EGGNOG WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

MAYBE.

Continuing in spirit of things-that-don't-suck, I've uploaded my personal holiday playlist here on 8tracks.com! Sixteen Christmas tracks, plus one for Hanukkah. Jarrod and I have been listening to some variation of this for years.

Because 8tracks doesn't show the full tracklisting—and because I'm the type of person who likes to know exactly what's coming—here are the seventeen songs. Breeze past the red and green text if you DO like surprises!

  1. You know, I've NEVER tried egg nog. Drinking something with the word egg in it just never appealed to me.

  2. Crystal — Understandable. I'm not a huge fan of eggs either, but this brand doesn't taste eggy! Just delicious. :)

  3. My mom said the other day that "eggnog just isn't the same as when I was a kid." I think it's because my grandma and great-aunts made awesome eggnog. I've only tried eggnog once, and that was not a pleasant experience. This blog made me really crave it. Too bad that it's almost three am where I live. I want to go to a grocery store right now. :) That Christmas list is awesome, I love Julian Casablancas! I didn't know that he had any Christmas songs out, so thank you for that.

P.S. Your book is going to be officially released in less than 24 HOURS! OhmygoodnessgraciousIamsoexcited!

  4. Mary Clare — Julian's song is actually one that Jimmy Fallon, Horatio Sanz, Chris Kataan, and Tracy Morgan perform every year on SNL. Last year, Julian was a surprise guest and did this rocking version! And I hope you have a chance to try REAL eggnog this year! Jarrod and I were both shocked at the difference.

    P.S. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

  5. My favourite is 2000 miles, though I've never heard the Coldplay version. The Pretenders all the way! But I also love Just like Christmas by Low (it has Oslo in it!) and The Reindeer will fight for Christmas by The Substitutes.

And I'm going to ask my Pan to bring organic eggnog back from London on Friday.

    Yaaay! Christmas! Yay!

  6. I've never tried Eggnog we don't have it in the Uk but you know I now love PB&J and pancakes, bacon & maple syrup. So maybe I'll give it a shot :-)

Favourite Xmas song - Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas the Judy Garland version

  7. Uh, so no eggnog from London, then. Bah. Humbug.

  8. You're right on, Stephanie. Organic Valley has the best eggnog on the planet, bar none! I only wish it weren't limited to the holidays, I want it year round...

  9. I'm not feeling Christmasy yet this year, but once I do I LOVE Reliant K's "Merry Christmas Here's to Many More". It's about the kind of Christmas I want to have.

  10. Haha. I love eggnog even the non-organic kind so I guess that eggnog will blow my mind.

  11. I make home-made eggnog.

Yeah, just call me Martha Stewart.

Cannot wait to listen to Carol of the Meows. that is the one that just stuck to my brain when I read the title. ( I am really hoping it involved cats.....)

    One more day!!

  12. I've never had eggnog before--not real eggnog--but this weekend my sister picked up SilkNog--soy egg nog and it was AWESOME! So I have no idea how it compares to the real thing, but I loved it.

And I totally rock out every year to Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas--even though I don't celebrate it:( OOOH! It's almost time to pop in Love Actually!

  13. Okay. I will try it. Because when it comes to egg nog in baked goods? I'm a HUGE fan. Like when Starbucks had that eggnog mini loaf a couple of years ago?? YUM! And Trader Joe's eggnog cookies are SO FREAKING DELICIOUS!!

I want to like eggnog. I do. So I'm going to see if I can find the brand you recommend!

Oooh, I want to hear Snow Patrol's When I Get Home for Christmas. I love them!

  14. Thanks for the tip on the eggnog! I'm having an ugly christmas sweater party this weekend and we wanted to serve egg nog but not make it from scratch. This sounds perfect.

  15. Dear Stephanie,

One of my favourite christmas songs is hungarian. Search on Youtube this song: Animal Cannibals - Csak karácsony

The song and clip are hilarious! A competition between Santa Claus and Jesus Christ: who brings the best present for the people...

Well you know, here in Hungary, not Santa Claus is the one who brings the presents. The little Jesus brings the tree and the presents for us :))

Santa Claus comes on 6th December to the children and brings a lot of chocolate and candies. He puts the goodies in the shoes of the children, which are usually placed in the window for the night. In the morning the good children find it and are very happy. :)

  16. I've always loved eggnog and was unaware of all this hatred. ;)

  17. Favorite holiday song of all time is "O Holy Night" and my favorite rendition of it to date is Lea Michele's on the Glee Christmas album. It's outstanding!

And organic egg nog and I have been very well acquainted for three winters now, too! When I add it to my morning coffee it's DIVINE.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1. Egg nog fills me with immeasurable amounts of glee, so I'm expecting to positively vibrate upon sipping the Organic Valley kind. I'm so glad you persevered and got to a point of nog-like. I'm strongly in favor of festive beverages.

    2. It is impossible to name ONE favorite Christmas song. Here are several I adore: "Baby, It's Cold Outside" (even though it's pretty date-rapey), "Winter Wonderland" as performed by Fleming & John (which riffs on Zepp's "Misty Mountain Hop"), "Sometimes You Have to Work on Christmas" by Harvey Danger, "Merry Christmas Baby" by James Brown, "One More Sleep Till Christmas" from the Muppet Christmas Carol (one of the only Christmas Eve carols I know!), "Thanks For Christmas" by XTC, "Gabriel's Message" by Sting, "Christmas All Over Again" by Tom Petty, "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" as performed by U2, and (don't make fun) "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" from Amy Grant's Home for Christmas album -- it has this crazy sort of Celtic-y jig bit at the end that makes me think of young Christian-Bale-as-Laurie playing with the March girls and, like, zipping through the snowy woods on a sleigh BECAUSE I AM RIDICULOUS but I just love it. Don't believe me? It starts at 1:46.

Dude, I may have to make you a Christmas mix.

  19. Ok, I don't have anything of substance to add to the eggnog converstaion, but I can talk a lot about Christmas music.

Specifically, my favorite Christmas album of all time. It's Snowed In by Hanson - and before anyone gets all "omg Hanson they suck" on me or whatever, let me just say one thing: you're wrong. And their Christmas album is mindblowing. Even though they've put out tons of other stuff, and this album is from like 1998 or something, I still think it's probably the best thing they've done. And I say this as a HUGE fan of all their stuff.

    [/Hanson fangirl]

And almost anyone can sing O Holy Night and I'll love it. Carol of the Bells, too.

  20. Okay, I will try your suggestion. Cause yeah, I'm not an egg nog fan, and tend to only drink it when there is far more spiced rum than nog.

Also: DO YOU KNOW WHAT TOMORROW IS????????? Yeah, there's this amazing book coming out. Maybe you've heard of it. :D

  21. I LOVE eggnog. We make it from scratch every year and it tastes so much better than the store bought. However, it is quite tedious to make so I will definitely try the organic version.

P.S. Are you excited beyond belief?!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I can drink Eggnog every once in awhile but there is something about the consistancy that creeps me out. I will see if I can find some of the good stuff and have my mind blown.

I LOVE Christmas music & sometimes give Christmas mixes as Christmas cards. I have 6 of the tracks you have on your playlist :). I tried to put some of my favorites up on 8Tracks. Ok the meow song um when I was in 8th grade my friends mom had a whole Christmas CD with real cat meowing, The Jingle Cats.

One more sleep till Anna is here!! I have been looking at bookstores to see if it got shelved early.

  23. I was skeptical of your Christmas music list, but frankly, anything with Julian Casablancas attached to it cannot be anything be deliciously awesome.

Congrats for tomorrow! Hope you have a great day, Stephanie! How exciting!

  24. Ah I love Frosty! :3 A total Christmas classic indeed.

Ooh I've never had eggnog before, but I've heard a lot about it. I get the Organic Valley brand milk though. :)

    Word Verification: Prizing. :P

  25. Maybe if I go somewhere that has it I might give it a try. I don't know if I'm dedicated enough to buy some without trying first

  26. Just got ANNA on my Kindle. PSYCHED!!!! Be back tomorrow to gush!

    Congrats on Anna's bday :)

  27. Fairytale of New York by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl should be on the list, if you ask my humble opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Funny that this should be my first post on this awesome blog, (count me as a new devoted Perkins fan!) BUT Father Christmas by the Kinks has to be one of my all time-not played very often- must play at every Christmas party faves YouTube it here It's got this raucous punky chorus of "Father Christmas give us some money!" perfect for belting out with a broad English accent.

  29. I though Fresh Market brand was the best, but then I tried Organic Valley. So good! But you might also want to try Homestead Creamery. It comes in a classic glass milk bottle. It's richer and creamier than OV, no joke. But OV has more of that lovely holiday spice in it. So it's hard to pick a favorite.

  30. Best damn Eggnog ever! I just got some the other day at the store and completely forgot about it. Then I found it in my fridge only a few minutes ago and tried it. It's 2:52am and I'm drinking the most fantastic Eggnog I've ever had! It really makes me feel happy inside. Can't wait for my mom to try some, I'm sure she'll love it too.
